What is the Neighborhood Guardian Program? The Neighborhood Guardian Program is, "neighbors helping neighbors, keeping children safe" -- a volunteer, citizen-driven program designed to reduce the prevalence and incidence of child maltreatment. It is basically a community development and empowerment approach that solicits natural leaders within communities, and utilizes their key leadership strengths to recruit other volunteers so that information, referrals, and supports can be provided to families at risk of the conditions that may lead to child maltreatment. Goals include keeping children safe; helping families solve crises as close to home as possible and within natural family resources if available; keeping children within family networks if removal from the home is necessary due to abuse or threat of abuse/neglect/dependency; and arranging for services to be provided in neighborhoods as close to consumers as possible. Other goals include empowering neighbors to take responsibility for the safety of their children; developing important action agendas for future citizen involvement; and teaching leadership and advocacy skills to neighbors and family members so that they can become lifelong advocates for all children. There are 8 steps, or "stages" neighborhoods/citizens can go through in the program model (for the actual program model, click on this link to view a picture of the program model -- you can zoom in or out by clicking on the directional square that appears if you hover your mouse over the picture, or by scrolling your mouse) -- Neighborhood Guardian Program Model -- stages and cycles How can you get involved??? By calling (910) 222-6089 and asking for Robin Jenkins -- we'll get back to you very quickly. Many neighborhoods need your help -- if you're unaware of the number of child maltreatment (e.g., abuse) cases and would like to know more; or if you have resources (like "volunteer time", "money", "networking skills", etc.) that you can give, please call today.
