JAC Provides Much Needed Services to At-Risk Children and Their Families

C.A.R.E.S. stands for "Coalition for Awareness of Resources, Education of Substances" -- like many programs, it depends on community contributions in the form of cash and in-kind as well as volunteer hours. What better goal is there than to help Cumberland County families nurture children without the negative influences of drugs, tobacco and alcohol?. E-mail Yvonne, the Coordinator, to become involved today!

Your Contributions In Action!

CommuniCare's annual Barbecue sale was a striking success! Because of the hard work of board members, staff and other volunteers, we experienced our highest sales rate ever! Special thanks to Natasha Scott, MSW of Cumberland County Schools (and a CC CommuniCare board member) for being our top ticket seller -- Natasha sold several hundred tickets and wowed the community (and us) with her enthusiasm, support and dedication to children and families throughout Cumberland County---Way to go, Natasha! Natasha wins a free certificate toribbon.wmf (2678 bytes) the restaurant of her choice...a nice way to celebrate her hard work. Exuberant thanks also to (former) Lt. Eugene Hallock (sales, logistics), Mr. Melvin Lindsay (logistics, support), and many, many others who helped make the event such a success.

We're Moving!!!!!!! -- Special thanks to the City of Fayetteville for giving us office space for the past 7 years ... but it's time to go. The City needs the space for the newly combined Parks and Recreation Department, so on June 16th, CommuniCare is moving to 711-A Executive Place (just off Raeford Rd. behind the Harris Teeter) -- we are becoming tenants of, and partners with Cumberland County Mental Health -- our new offices are great, centrally located and easy to find. A warm "thank-you" (as always) is extended to the County Manager's Offices of Cumberland County for their help in re-locating and facilitating our move(s). We look forward to an Open House event in the near future.

Remember to check back regularly for updates on programs and activities.

Juvenile Assessment Center--"In the Good Ole Summertime"!

JAC is gearing up for the summer -- JAC staff members are planning several Youth Enrichment Seminars (YES) that will be informative and focused on the learning goals of the youth. JAC is also planning another round of Parenting Skills training,  along with hands-on learning and experiential trips to engage youth and develop their social, behavioral and problem solving skills.

Again, we bid a fond farewell to Mary Angelicchio, JAC's Administrative Support staff member is leaving us after 5+ years on June 13th..Mary, THANK YOU and GOOD LUCK!

C.A.R.E.S. Substance Abuse Coalition Coordinates Exemplary Prevention Programming

C.A.R.E.S. is taking the lead role as a component of CCMHC's Community Collaborative, in bringing the Strengthening Families © program to Cumberland County. SFP is a comprehensive prevention effort begun and evaluated as a model program toward the prevention of family management, substance abuse and other risk conditions that can lead to school failure, crime, and an array of social/emotional problems. SFP training will occur June 16th and 17th at the Spring Lake Family Resource Center.

C.A.R.E.S.'s  summer camp is also set to begin very soon -- working with elementary aged youth, the camp is designed to provide a fun, informative, and skill building environment with the ultimate goal of raising healthy children free of substances....call Yvonne at 321-6425 for more information.

Child Maltreatment Prevention -

Neighborhood Guardian Program volunteers are working again in the Bonnie Doone and Eagles Nest neighborhoods. Eagles Nest has set up a resource center for youth to get homework assistance (with the leadership of CCDSS), access to the Internet for job searching, etc. -- Sharee Strickland (Housing Authority) has been critically important to moving the project along...Walter and Barbara Hodge are re-igniting interest in the Bonnie Doone site -- they are bringing in their own pastor and using their church as a sponsor for a new group. It's exciting to see the energy and commitment to keeping children safe! .....  We need your volunteerism -- call today for information on how to become involved.

Youth Leadership Development Gets the Nod for Faith-Based Youth Diversity Work

Our Youth Leaders of Today program just received notification that the United Way's Youth Growth Stock Trust will fund a very exciting youth-led, faith based diversity and leadership project over the next 6 months. The effort will work to unite church youth groups and community youth leaders to try and solve the problems associated with the number of children of color (primarily African American children) who fall behind in school, are suspended/expelled, have social problems, and are referred into the juvenile courts. Jeff's group(s) will conduct multiple problem-solving dialogues and interdenominational sessions, and will host a large youth-led community convocation in the fall to both engage the broader community as well as to publicize their results. Stay tuned for this exciting and wonderful work to learn more about it....and call Jeff (321-6440) to learn more about how to get involved!

Our Juvenile Crime Prevention Council Coordinator, Sarah Hemingway, has been very busy with Program Agreements, revisions, and getting our final funding plan to the Board of County Commissioners for approval and forwarding to the state. Sarah is also working with John Clark, JAC Director, to pinpoint problems and to provide updated, accurate client tracking information -- and to make it available for anyone who might require the data. The JCPC continues to find ways to become more integrated with the Community Collaborative of CCMHC (System of Care), Cumberland County Schools (alternative learning programs and dropout/truancy prevention), as well as C.A.R.E.S. and other community groups.  Call Sarah at any time (433-1116) to learn more or to get involved.
